Unlocking Happiness: A Data-Driven Approach to Discovering Your Passion

To find fulfillment, immerse yourself in diverse experiences and cultivate profound self-awareness through continuous reflection. Tools like the MBTI can be helpful, but the journey inward is paramount. Peter Drucker's advice to Jim Collins highlights a crucial choice: building great businesses or great ideas. This decision hinges on understanding your true self, not who you think you should be. To truly know yourself, adopt a systematic approach. Track your daily activities, creative output, and emotional state. This method transforms self-discipline into a powerful tool for self-discovery. By meticulously recording your experiences, you gain invaluable data about your preferences and needs. This practice allows you to become a scientist of your own life, uncovering patterns and insights that lead to greater happiness and fulfillment. Implement a Life Quality Tracker (LQT) to monitor key aspects of your daily life. Include elements such as date, day quality (on a scale), bedtime, wake-up time, sleep hours, deep work hours, exercise, and a detailed list of activities. Consistency is key; track your progress every evening to capture accurate details and emotions. The LQT reveals personalized insights, helping you understand your unique needs and preferences. For instance, you might discover the optimal amount of deep work you can handle, the importance of sleep for your well-being, or the activities that bring you the most joy. My personal experiment with LQT revealed three critical insights: the necessity of daily deep work, the paramount importance of sleep, and the value of simplicity. I learned that my capacity for deep work is limited to 2-3 hours per day, best done in the morning after breakfast. Sleep, specifically 8-9 hours per night, significantly impacts my mood and productivity. The most fulfilling days were those that included writing, walks in nature, and meaningful conversations. These insights led me to realize that I thrive in focused, meaningful work rather than mindless routine tasks. Sorting the data from the LQT highlighted the importance of sleep over exercise for my overall well-being. On my best days, I consistently had 8-9 hours of sleep, while exercise had little impact on my day quality. Writing emerged as an essential activity; days without deep work felt awful. The simplest days, characterized by rest, focused writing, nature walks, and quality time with loved ones, were the most fulfilling. This realization prompted a significant career shift. I exited my business, moved to another country, and dedicated myself to writing. By aligning my career with my ideal lifestyle, I achieved a level of happiness I had never experienced before. The key is to shift your focus from "What do I want to do with my life?" to "How do I want to spend my days?" This question encourages you to design a life that aligns with your values and brings you joy.
